“ Our club, the P.E.N. Club, is materially a small organisation,

but it upholds an immense and splendid banner, the banner

of free thought and free discussion.” H.G. Wells, 1936

“ Let every man be the exponent and the embodiment of this great ideal of

world peace, of which writers are laying the foundation.”

Mahatma Gandhi, 1945

“ If you were to ask me whether PEN has a political dimension,

I would simply refer to the Charter. You find it all there.” Heinrich Böll, 1971

“ In a word where independent voices are increasingly stifled,

PEN is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.” Margaret Atwood, 1984

“ In language lies the main weapon of resistance.” Rigoberta Menchu., 1996

“ With all its flounderings and failings and mistaken acts, it is still,

I think, a fellowship moved by the hope that one day the work it tries and often

manages to do will no longer be necessary. Needless to add,

we shall need extraordinarily long lives to see that noble day. Meanwhile we

have PEN, this fellowship bequeathed to us by several generations

of writers for whom their own success and fame were simply not enough.” Arthur Miller, 2001

“ When another writer in another house is not free,

no writer is free. This, indeed, is the spirit that informs the

solidarity felt by PEN, by writers all over the world.” Orhan Pamuk, 2006

“ I’ve had a long and close relationship with PEN, both here in England and in

America, and I well remember that when I was in need of what PEN can do, that PEN

support here, in America and elsewhere, was colossally important and wonderfully

unified, and it really mattered me a great deal.” Salman Rushdie, 2007

“ Freedom of expression is the foundation of human rights, the source of humanity,

and the mother of truth. To strangle freedom of speech is to trample on human rights,

stifle humanity, and suppress truth.” Liu Xiaobo, 2009

“ My respect for this organisation has no borders —

PEN has been fierce, so consistent and ferocious in its efforts that

it is hard to ignore their impact worldwide.” Toni Morrison, 2011

“ The right to mother tongue or the language of one’s culture is

not a privilege to be granted or withdrawn at will, it’s a human right.

PEN is one of its supporters.” Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, 2016

“ I want you to know that your letters, which have rendered

iron curtains meaningless and ineffective, have filled my two-steps’-long cell

with resistance, resolve and hope….Knowing that you are right there,

akin to keeping company to caged birds, is beyond any dream inside this cell.” Nedim Türfent, 2019

“ I received the PEN/Oxfam-Novib award in 2013, and later on the

same year I received the Tucholsky award from Swedish PEN and the Pinter award

from English PEN. With the funds of the three awards we

founded a school in Syria that was able to shelter and educate children for six years. Until it was bombed by the Russian forces six months ago.” Samar Yazbek, 2020

Mahatma Gandhi, 1945

» Samar Yazbek, 2020
